Helping young hydrangeas handle full sun
By Leola Young
Check for Soil Disturbance
Freshly planted hydrangeas can attract moles or voles. Their tunnels may loosen the soil around roots, causing water to drain away instead of soaking in. Press gently around the base of the plant to firm up the soil. If water seems to run off or disappear fast, then check that it’s actually reaching the root zone. Keep an eye out for new holes or soft spots near plant and refill or tamp them down as needed.
Water Often
Young hydrangeas dry out fast. Water deeply and regularly to keep the soil moist — especially during hot spells. A soaker hose or drip line makes it much easier.
Add Mulch
Spread 2-3 inches of mulch (bark, compost, etc.) around the base to lock in moisture, block weeds, and keep roots cool.
Give Temporary Shade
Until they’re better rooted, protect them from the strongest sun. Use whatever works: Shade cloth, an umbrella, a lawn chair leaned over the plant.
